I have been awful at updating this blog with my online play. I stopped playing online for a while, and I was dedicating way more to live poker. Because my play online is so diverse( I have been trying different methods, different sites etc) it is tough to track on here. I am re-assessing my online strategy and seeing which way works best for me. Is it just tournies, is it just cash, is it a mix of both, what limits should I be playing etc.
I will say that in the last 2 months, I have been on Pokerstars and Full tilt. At the end of the day, I am up $35 total from the two pages. I have since cashed out on FTP and just have money in my pstars account.
On pstars it went something like this:
- started with $150, won a bunch in small cash games, lost a bunch in tournies.
- put in another $150, then another $50. That puts me $350 in to the web page.
- cashed in a couple of tournies, and made some money in cash games.
- Currently my account is $185, which means I have lost $165 on this page.
On FTP it went something like this:
- started with $150.
- won about $100 in cash games
- got greedy with my tourney entries and never was able to cash, spent most of the $250 in buy-ins.
- put in another $200, so I was into this $350.
- played .5/$1 cash games and got my acocunt up to $550 total. I cashed out the full $550, putting me at up $200 on this site.

Tourney/cash on 9/25
Saturday was are monthly tournmanet for the league I am with the points to see who goes to Vegas. I am out of the points race so for me to make it, I have to win one of the remaining 4 tournaments. I was playing this tournament to win. It is a different structure of how to play because it is a quick tournament with blinds going up so fast and we dont have a lot of chips, so it forces a little bit more aggression out of the players.
I played my game and we started with 36 players, we got down to the final 17 players, and I was at avg stack, but that still puts you at about 12-12 big blinds. I had aq suited, it went call of blinds, avg. raise, that raised was called, I saw my hand and I shoved. one caller, flop was kj7 rainbow. WOmen that called me had kq, I was crushed, no A came and my tourney was done.
During the cash game there were a lot of hands, but we didnt play that long and I started with 100, bought in for another 100, got that up to 400, got that quickly back down to about 80, ended up cashing out for 120, so that put me at losing 80 for the night.

online 9/20-9/24
I did a lot of online playing last week, but I never updated this blog. It was all tournaments ranging from 4-12 dollar buy in's. It is funny, that in person I will enter a $200 tourney with no problem and/or bring a ton of money to cash game, I will play for way smaller limits. I have my reasons for that, but I will save that for another time.
Last week, my big win( not really financially) was I entered a $4 tournament that had 1163 people in it. I got down to the final 40, so I was way in the cash. I was pretty short stacked, but I played smart and didnt just shove with anything, and I eventually got it to where I was about 10th place with 25 left, but blinds were creeping fast. I ended up getting QQ and had to shove, got called by AA. what else can I do? I went out 14th. Here is the problem, I only one $43 for that. Yes, I wont 10 times my buy in, but to sit there for 4 hours and win 43 bucks is good and bad all at the same time.
Other then that last week, I played 22 tournmanents where it is the double or nothing were it is 5 to enter. I won 12 of them, so I ended up exactly even when you back out the small fee on each one.
I also did 6 KO tournies all for 9 bucks each. in those 6 tournies, I knocked out 13 people so I got 13 bucks on that, but I only cashed in one of them, so out of the 54 I spent to get in to those tournies, I only one about 25 total, so I lost about 30 on those.
I did the daily dollar twice( $1 to enter) and cashed both times, but both times it was only for 2.20 so I ended up winning approx. $2 total in those.
I did about 6, $8 tournies and about 10 $4 tournies, in all of those I ended up cashing in a couple but only winnning about 45 total, so I lost on that.
In cash, I stepped up and was playing .5/1, 2 windows open at all times. In the first 3 days of the week when I played, I ended up $375 in those days. It was great, the big hand was when I had kj suited and I was on the button and it was $3.50 to see the flop and 4 people were already in. Instead of raising, I jut called( I had about 80 in front of me). flop comes out aq10 rainbow. it goes check, $7 bet, raise to $18. I then push for all mu chips, happy to take it down or get someone on a draw to commit all of their money to me. Both betters called me( the others folded). We all had about the same, but they both had about 10 more, the turn was the 4 of clubs, which put 2 clubs on board, they both insta shoved all in for their remaining 20 or so each. I am ahead with my straight, but I have no flush. Other guy has a10 of clubs, so now he has 2 pair and a flush draw( in my head I am thinking 13 outs to beat me) other guy shows q10 so he can only win with a q, bc I already lost if the case 10 comes out. River is a 7 of diamonds and I take the whole pot.
The problem with that was within the next two days I was able to lose about $300 back to cash games, which put me back down for the week, and then last night I just bought in for 70 bucks at that table while watching the end of one of the games, got lucky on some hands, got up to 130 real quick and just signed off. It was an interesting week of online for me.

online play the last month
I have not been updating this as much as I should be, but I have moved to just playihg tournaments online. Playing cash games online is not my game. For me to play cash games, I want it to be in person.
As far as the tournaments go, I am up approx. $277 in the last month. It gets a little diffucult to track since it is between two different sites. On FTP I am playing the $6 KO tournies, and the $8 tournies. I will every once in a while play a $2-$7 tournament with a ton of people in it. 3 times I have been up a lot, and I have played a $26 tournament, and I have not cashed in any of those. The 6 and 8 dollar tournies always have either 90 or 180 people in it. In the last 2 weeks, I have had 6 cashes in these different tournaments on FTP, but they dont email results out.
On Pstars, I am playing the $4 and $8 tournies and I will do the $11 tournament if I am up. They email results of every tournament I play this double or nothing tournament they have sometimes for $5 a time. It's a 10 man SitnGo, and top 5 just double their money. I have played in 19 of them and cashed in 8 of them, so that means I have put out $95 to those tournies and I have won a total of $80( winnings plus entry back) so overall I am down $10 on them. I have cashed in two other tournies on Pstars.

Online 8/1
This was one of those days, where nothing could go wrong for me. I started playing around 7 at night and played until around 1130 or 12. I started with $50 in my ftp account and got it up to $230, even though I lost about 50 on my pstars account, still an overall great day.
On pstars, I had a $25 window open, a $12.50 table open, and then I always had a 1.15, 10 person double or nothing tourney open. I played 4 of those tourneys and won( top 5 double there money) 3 of them so I ended up only netting 2 dollar profit. they have the same double or nothing tourneys for way more money, but I need to get more of these under my belt before I start playing these for serious money. The cash games, I got absolutely crushed in. I can only recall one hand that I played very, very, badly, the other ones were just missed flops, etc and next thing I knew, I was out, and then I decided not to rebuy at all.
FTP was a different story, I won $180 on FTP and I was playing a table that had a $25 max buy in. The huge hand was later on in the night, I had about $40 in front of me and most people at the table had between $35-50. I am 2 seats from the BB. The guy UTB makes it $3, I have A10 spades, and I call. 4 more people call and we see a flop( $15 in pot so far). Flop comes out KKJ, 2 spades. Original raiser makes it $6, I insta call( thinking if anyone raises after, I will come back over the top since I have the nut flush draw, the straight draw, and I am hoping someone has ak, someone else has open ended, and maybe aj or smaller flush draw, but I just hope no one has kj. 2 guys call after me, one guys folds, it is now close to $40 in the pot. Turn is 10 of diamonds. Orig better goes all in for his final $11, at this point I assume he has kj, but I can still take down a huge side pot from the other 2 after me, so I call and not raise. The two guys after me call instantly. About $85 in the pot now, river is 4 spades. I hit the nut flush, and I know a boat beats me, but I still shove my remaining $17 or so, I get called by both. I win, take down the pot. It was about a $130ish pot, I have never seen a pot that big. Orig raiser had ak, so he was good the whole way until the rive. guy after me a10, to run gave him gut shot and pair, I am not sure why he stayed in. guy on button had 89 spades and hit his flush on the river. It was a crazy hand. After that I played a little more, but overall it was a great night online.

I am not sure why I was even playing today. Terry and I had gone to Delaware Park and played live from about 9pm-630am, and then we got back to his house, I couldn't sleep and next thing I knew it was 1030am and I was playing cash games. I wish I could tell you exactly how I did or what I played exactly, but I was not only tired there and felt like a zombie, we left his house at 530 that day and went and played up in towson from about 6pm-2am, so the whole weekend is sort of a non-sleep dream, but I know by looking back at my accounts and some hand history's, I ended up playing for about 3 hours total throughout the day and I won $16. It was all on pstars, i didn't even touch my FTP account.

Towson Tourney/cash games 7/31
This is a tourney we do one Saturday a month and then we play cash games after. The tourney is $100 and I lost that, and then I sat down for cash games. I bought in for $100, after some hands( I will get into later) I bought in for another 140, and then another 100 again, so I was into the game for $340. We played all night, I ended up walking out with $830 which puts me up $530 for the night in cash.. The game there is always 1/2, but it is a way more social game, I know everyone playing, and some of the pots just get out of control. There is always a raise and at least 2 calls pre-flop. The game is made up of about half people that know how to play poker and the other half that just sort of know or think they know. I just played my game the whole time. I had 7 pots I was involved in that were between 160-250, and I won 5 of them and lost 2 of them. At the beginning I was losing a lot of pots on the flop. I would have 55, flop would be akq, i would have ak, flop would 789 suited. I was just card dead for a while, but was getting good enough hands to call pre-flop.

Terry and I got up there at around 840 at night and by the time we both got to a table it was around 9:00. We decided we were going to play all night.
I started at 1/2 and bought in for $300. I played until 6am. I had my ups and my downs. Within the first hour, i was up $100 and things were looking good. No huge hands, just me raising and taking down pots at the right time and using my aggression to help me with cbet on flops and turns, I would take down the pot. I lost a pretty big hand about 2 hours into it, and that knocked me down to about 195, I hovered around the 175-240 mark for the next 4 or 5 hours, then when I had around 245, I woke up with KK UTG. I made it $10( at my table, I expected 2 callers with that). I got called by button and small blind. flop is AK10, I shove all in and I am called by a10, it holds up, he had less then me, but that hand still put me up to about $440. I then just grinded and played my game and got it to where I was up $290 for the night, and then on the last hand of the night( literally, I had my chips in a rack, terry was standing behind me getting ready to leave and they were breaking our table up, and I shipped about 240ish away on kings to a flush. At the end of the night, I ended up about $150 for the night, forgetting that when they switched tables on us, I had won a $100 black chip and had that in my pocked and forgot about it. It was great to find. Luckily for me, the next night would be way more winnings.

online play starts 7/30
The way I am going to approach my online game is more of a slow grind approach. I will only be playing .1/.25 limit and .25/.5 NL. The max buy in's for those table are 12.50 and 25.00 respectively. I will always have 2-3 windows open at all times, and my goal is to make 10-15 bucks an hour every time I play and look to have around 150 or so a week in profit. Once I grind that up to about 1500 or so, I will move up and play .5/1 nl and then grind that out until I can get up to about 5k. Every once in a while, I will take a stab at some tournaments, both low and high stakes and see where that gets me, but for the most part, I am sticking to cash games.
Playing these lower limit cash games is a change from what I play normally in live games, but online is a very different game with very different strategies and very different players. I want to start at these low limits and get a feel for the online game. I want to be able to grind it out and build up a bankroll and get a full feel for the game.

Tracking winnings/losings
One of the key things in playing poker( or any sort of gambling for that matter) is managing your bank roll and playing with in limits. You also need to be able to see where you have success and where you fail and then either alter the game you play or maybe change the limit. Now that I am starting this year long run to try to make as much as I can etc, I need to really focus on this. From now on, I will be tracking everytime I play and then evaluating how I do in that session. since my online financial goals are way different then my life game goals, they will be viewed very differently.

My playing in the last 2 weeks
It was about 2 weeks ago that I realized, I need to change my game, I need to start tracking every night I play, I need a money mgt. strategy, I need a way to be able to do this on a regular basis and be able to make money off of it on a regular basis. I will start tracking this in full detail starting on August 1( I am giving myself until them to get everything in order), but the last 5 times I have played this is how it has gone.
2 Thursdays ago at Jeff's House:
- 19 person tourney, 45 to enter, I came in 4th and won $60
- played 1/2 NL, bought in for $200, lost that, bought in for another $200, got that up to $550, and left. That puts me a net of plus $150 for the cash game, and +200 for the night.
last Thursday at Del. Park:
- $65 tournament, 66 entries, went out 6th, won $180
- played 1/2 NL, bought in for $300, walked away from table with $820, but some of that buy in was tourney winnings, so total winnings for the day was $570
- Overall a Great day
last Sat in AC:
- 1/2 NL, bought in for $300, lost it all
- $120 NL tourney, lost that
- 1/2 NL, bought in for $200, walked with $340
- Overall, a losing day

For the next 2 weeks, I will be testing out the different online sites and figuring out which ones I like best and which games I like to play. I will them start playing for real and starting my whole strategy on how to make money and play my type of game online.
Terry is the only person I can talk to about this, because he is really the only one I know that plays the amount I do, we have the same goals, and honestly we are better then most of the people I know and at least the people I talk to daily. Me and him have different styles, and we play different games, but we are each other's coach's and we are working together to make each other as good as we can be.

what i need/want to work on
There are so many things that I need to work on, and like anything in life, I need to keep the mentality that I always need to learn and that there are always people better then me.
For me, the biggest thing right now( as for most poker players)is knowing when to make the lay down. The last time I played cash games, there were 2 huge hands, that in hind sight, I should have been able to lay down. Yes, sometimes you are getting bluffed, but the ability to lay down a huge hand based on your read will save you so much money in the long run. I will get into more detail later about specific hands, but overall knowing when to lay down a huge hand, even if you think you have the best hand, is the biggest thing I need to work on if I plan to make this a full-time successful thing.

I am more talking about the different types of players that I know and also that I know are out there. I need to figure out exactly which one I am, which one I want to become and which one I never want to become.
Guys that play poker- This is the most common person I know. This is also the person that players like me can not wait to see at a table. Poker has become the new thing to do in a casino, so now when people get drunk instead of taking 1-300 and blowing it on red/black or roulette, they come to the poker table. These guys think that any ace is worth pushing all in, they think an 8 outer getting no pot odds is worth calling all their money. yes, these guys will win some money, but overall, these guys will never win and will always ship their money. These are the guys that will sit around with their friends, and they watch it on tv, but they are not poker players, and they are relying soley on what they see on tv to dictate their play.
Poker Players- These people not only love the game, but they are good at it. Over time( be it a 15 hour session or if you are tracking by weeks/months etc) they will always end up making money. They can play with anyone, and they are always confident in their ability to suceed no matter what game at what limit they are playing. These guy know when to make the call, know when to fold, know how to manage their money etc. These guys all still have jobs, they do not play poker full time, but when they do, they are good at it and they do it knowing full well they are going to make money doing it.
Ametuers and Pro players- In my mind the biggest difference between the 2 of these players is the bank roll. Both of these types are poker players and whatever their game is( tournies vs. cash, hold em, omaha etc), they know they are good and they know they can make money doing this. A pro has a huge bankroll and/or they have backers. There are thousands and thousands of ametuers out there who are just as good as the pro's, but they do not have the money to sit down and do a 1k tourney every day or have 5k to sit a bigger limit cash game. Both of these types of players know the exact limit they should be playing and they know when to walk away. Most ametuers are playing to build up the bank roll to become a pro.
I have played with pro's both in a tourney and in cash games. Terry just played in the main event and he was against tons of pros. The thing about poker is that yes, some people are going to be better, but just because someone is a pro, doesnt mean they can not be beat and that they are that much better. More times then not, the difference comes down to money. An example is people watch High Stakes Poker and talk about how good or bad these guys are. Negranue lost over 850K in 5 hours last time that was on. That was not all his money, and the other guys playing that are losing, can afford to lose. To a porfessional poker player, losing 15k is like me dropping a penny and not picking it up. I am not sure I want to be a pro, but for now, I know I am a poker player and I know I have the skill to be at a table with anyone. The key is sitting at the table and playing the limit that fits my bankroll.

Bad hands and Bad Beats
Any poker player can tell you about the bad hands they have played and the bad beats they have taken. I have won a lot of money over the years playing poker, but if you ask me to talk about the hands I remember, about 99% of them are going to be hands that I lost either by a bad beat or by a playing mistake that I made.
I hear people complain about bad beats all the time. Complaining about a bad beat gets you no where. It happens to every player, and for the most part every player has bad beat someone else. An example is Terry just played in the WSOP main event. His final hand, he had AA and got called by QQ and the guy spiked a Q. That is a bad beat. To get to that level, he was all in with AJ against AQ and he spiked a J to stay alive. That is also a bad beat. The point is Terry was upset about the hand, but he didnt complain about it. He took it, like a real poker player does, and he moves on. Yes, he will always think about that hand, but complaining about a bad beat will get you no where and he knows that.
There are ways to avoid bad beats, but at the end of the day, they are always going to happen, and you just have to not only get lucky to avoid them, but you have to play smart. I am not saying that I do not dwell on bad beats, but you cant sit and complain and get mad at someone for calling. Poker is a game that can be played many different ways with many different strategies, and you should never yell or criticize a call someone makes or a play someone makes just because you think they did it wrong.
2 weeks ago up in Elkridge playing a 1/2 game, there was a raise to $7 pre-flop. When it got to me on the button, there had been 4 callers already and I had 77, and I decided just to call. A raise there would probably get re-raised by a monster, and if I smooth call and hit my set I am golden and can win a huge pot. Flop comes out Q74. Guy makes a cbet for 15, it gets raised to 25, I go all in. This is exactly what I want. I know middle set is good, if someone had QQ, they would have raised more pre-flop. I push all in and the guy calls, he shows Q7. I have him dominated, he is down to two outs( only the other 2 queens in the deck will give him a better hand them me). Of course, a Q comes on the river. I can't complain( other guys at the table said he should have never been in the hand with Q7). I said nothing, I was pissed, and we joked about how lucky he got, but all you can do is move on to the next hand.
The point of all of that is that every table I sit at and anytime I am somewhere and people start talking about poker, all you hear are stories of bad beats and what if's and how some loser called you with a crap hand and bad beat you etc. Real poker players know that is part of the game and when you do nothing about complain about bad beats and/or you just criticize every move that someone else makes, you are giving yourself away as someone who truly doesnt get the game of poker.

Best Moments
Even though you always remember the bad hands and the losing hands, there are times that I will remember as good moments for me.
The biggest thing I remember in a good way is when I was in an online tourney on party poker( 2005) and I came in 2nd and won 14K. It went from 9pm to about 3am, and had about 3500 people in it, and there were re-buys allowled for the first hour. The first hand of the tourney, I had KJ in the big blind, 6 people limped in. I just checked, flop was AQ10. I checked, by the time it got back to me, there had been 4 all in's. Knowing this was a re-buy tourney and people push, and knowing I flopped the nuts and there was no flush draw, even a set couldnt beat me, so I called. The hands I was up against was Q10, A10, A8, and another Q10. It was fucking awesome. From that moment on, I couldnt lose. Then my power went out about 3 hours into the tourney. I went up the street to Keller's house, and by 2am, chip, tj, and mike were all there drinking and cheering me on. It was an awesome night.
Another great moment I remember, was the first time I played in a poker room at a casino. I remember walking in, knowing I could play, but I had never played in a casino before, and I was a little nervous/intimaded etc. It was at the Sands in AC( it is no longer there) and it was 6 of us that were up there. We started by playing a $50 re buy tournament. The guy next to me was decked out head to toe in all poker gear. I remember being intimadated and thinking that he must be great because he has on all this poker parafanilia. Remember, I was abot 22 and this was the first time in a poker room in a casino. After about 20 minutes, I realized how bad this guy was. I then did pretty well in the tournament, and after that was over I preceeded to play cash game for the next 12 hours. I won 300 that night. i couldnt tell you one hand I had, but I remember the feeling of knowing I belong and knowing that I will never be intimadated at the table again.
The thing about good moments is that you have to move on from them the same way you move on from bad ones. Last week, I won 600 at Del Park. I have to forget that happenned and play each day and each hand like it is a brand new hand. You can never get to happy or complacent with your game or you will lose money quickly.

Goals for playing
I have goals both mentally and monetary. My financial goal breaks down something like this( knowing this is all from 8/1/10, which is when I plan to start this year long poker run I am going on).
- start with $1000 on 8/1. My goal is to gain 1K every month at least through live cash games and lower limit cash games online. The big thing is to make sure I am playing at a level of where I am not worrying about a re-buy and I feel comfortable. What I mean by that, is that 1k can go way further and make me more money at a 1/2 table then it can at a 2/5 or 5/10. Yes, I could win bigger pots quicker at a higher limit game, but I could also lose it very quickly. My starting with the $1000 is going to be $200 online and $800 for live poker.
- $200 for online. This will be used only for .25/.5 no limit cash games, starting with 2 windows open every time I am playing. My goal is to master each level until I move up to another level( sort of like a video game). I am basing that on winning 100 times the buy in. The max buy in for that game is $25, so I will play that until I have $2500 in winnings. This is going to take a long time, but after doing that, then I will move to 1/2 online. This is a long term strategy. This is not meant to win 500 a night, but more 50-100 each session that I play. I will play some small satellite tournies, but I am primarily focusing on cash games. I need to get the hands under my belt online, and also at this limit, it will help me to get my game down. I am spending the next 2 weeks figuring out exactly which site I want to play on, how I want to set up my place to play at home, am I going to play at work at all in my down time etc.. It is looking like pokerstars will be where I start, but I also like the way full tilt is set up. Once Football season starts, i will be playing way more in sportsbook.com. The reason for that is the same reason that so many people play on bodog and on wsex. There are so many random guys on those sites that are winning money betting on football, and then going directly to the poker room and putting their winnings on poker. I love playing against these guys, because for the most part, they are just guys playing poker, and they really can not compete with the type of game I am playing, and they are what is referred to as easy money or dead money.

Also, there are going to be times when you are card dead and unlucky etc. and you have to be able to suck it up and not keep donking off money and just suck up that loss for the day and go at it the next time. When Terry and I were at Ceasers in December, I was in a 1/2 game, i got it up to $1400, and instead of walking away, I forced myself to stay, and ended up only winning 100 for that session. In my mind, I lost 1300 that day. I have to be able to set a winning goal and walk away once I hit that number. All winnings both online and in person will be saved in a seperate poker account. I do not have a certain goal in mind to hit fo me to start playing 2/5. For now, 1/2 is the game I am not only the best at, but I feel the most comfortable at.
